Why I Took the CrossFit Level 2 Trainer Course

At Beyond Walls, we believe in constantly striving to get better—both as athletes and as coaches. That’s why I recently completed the CrossFit Level 2 Trainer Course: two days of intensive training, reflection, and skill sharpening to ensure I’m delivering the best coaching experience possible.

Here’s what it was all about—and why it matters to you:

1. Coaching, Not Just Instructing

Level 1 taught us what to teach. Level 2 is all about how to teach. It focused on sharpening three core coaching skills:

  • Teaching: Breaking down movements clearly and effectively.
  • Seeing: Training the coach’s eye to spot faults in both static and dynamic positions.
  • Correcting: Using short, actionable cues that help you improve on the spot.

The goal? Making sure every cue, correction and class minute helps you move better, safer, and more efficiently.

2. Coaching the Whole Room

It’s one thing to correct a single athlete—it’s another to manage and support a full class. We dug into:

  • Group management: Planning every session to the minute so you get the most out of your hour.
  • Presence & attitude: Being fully present and leading with energy, clarity, and care.
  • Demonstration skills: Whether it’s me or another athlete, you deserve clear, confidence-inspiring demos that help you understand the movements.

3. Movement Matters

We studied the eight common movement themes that underpin everything from air squats to Olympic lifts—things like midline stabilisation, core-to-extremity movement, posterior chain engagement and active shoulders.

This deep dive helps me give you more accurate feedback and smarter scaling—so you're not just moving, you're moving well.

4. Coaching Nutrition Like a WOD

We also touched on nutrition—how behaviour change really works and how we can support it in a gym setting. Just like training, success starts with small wins. Whether it’s tackling one meal at a time or doing it alongside your mates in a challenge, you’re more likely to succeed when you’re supported and empowered.

5. Better Programming, Smarter Scaling

We explored what makes great programming: variety, intensity, and progression. But more importantly, we looked at how to scale it properly—because good coaching meets you where you are.

Whether you’re brand new, intermediate, advanced or training around an injury, the right scaling keeps the stimulus, challenge and fun intact.

6. It’s Not Just Me — We’re All In

While this was a personal step forward, it’s part of a much bigger picture. At Beyond Walls, we’re committed to developing our entire coaching team. That means encouraging external qualifications like this one and investing time into internal coaching reviews, development sessions and feedback loops. Our goal is simple: consistent, high-quality coaching for every member, in every class.

Why It Matters

You trust us to guide your fitness journey. That’s a responsibility I take seriously. This course was part of my commitment to be better for you—more attentive, more effective, and more in tune with how to help every athlete in the room succeed.

And trust me—I've got a notebook full of ideas, cues, and refinements ready to roll out.

Let’s keep building something brilliant—together.
